Resources & Training

Volunteer Yukon believes that the key to building a strong Yukon with a strong volunteer spirit lies in developing the skills and knowledge of the people who work and volunteer with non-profit organizations every day.

Board members, staff, and volunteers can access a wide variety of resources and training on an ongoing basis.

Lunch & Learn sessions

Attend monthly Lunch & Learn's in Whitehorse - free 1-hour sessions that provide 'food for thought' for the voluntary sector, as well as suggestions for further resources and guidance in a variety of areas.

YukonBoard Assessment Tool

The Yukon Board Assessment Tool helps boards evaluate how they are performing on a broad range of board operations, roles, and responsibilities. The tool includes questions about board meetings, community relations, financial management, strategic planning, liability and risk management, recruitment and orientation, and more.

All of your board members should first agree they want to go through the assessment. Then you need to register your interest in using the tool with Volunteer Yukon (call or email us) - this helps us track how the tool is being used.

After you register, the assessment tool and instructions will be sent to your group's contact person to circulate to your board. Each board member will need to take 30-45 minutes to answer the questions in the tool. The results should then be discussed by your whole board. Where were the areas of dis/agreement? What might the different opinions mean to your work as a team? What actions might your board start taking to improve how it works?

Volunteer Yukon staff may also be available to provide coaching to your board as you work to improve your performance. Contact Us to find out what services may be available.

The Yukon Board Assessment Tool was created as part of Volunteer Yukon's Capacity-Building Pilot Project. The project was funded by the Community Development Fund (CDF) of the Government of Yukon and the Canada Volunteerism Initiative (CVI), a federally funded initiative hosted regionally by Volunteer Yukon.

Resource Library

Volunteer Yukon has a resource library like no other in the Yukon, where volunteers and voluntary organizations can access literature on board development, non-profit management, and volunteer program management in one central location.

With a Volunteer Yukon membership, items in our library can be borrowed for up to three weeks at a time. Non-members may use the resources in-office at any time.
