History

Through a feasibility study done in 1998, Yukon non-profit/non-governmental organizations identified a need for a central office that could offer access to resources, training, consultation, and support in various areas of volunteer management and non-profit organization management.

That central 'hub' would also serve as a place for volunteers to obtain information on non-profit organizations, making it easier for them to find volunteer opportunities that would match their skills.

The Yukon Volunteer Bureau was established four years later, opening its doors in April 2002 as a pilot program under the United Way of Yukon Society.

April 1, 2004, the Bureau became a non-profit organization and is now a registered charity in Canada.

In June 2009, the Bureau changed its name to Volunteer Yukon, while retaining some elements of its former logo.

We currently receive $67,000 annual core funding from Yukon Government, Department of Community Services. Until 2011, we will be spearheading two projects that are funded by Tr'ondek Hwech'in First Nation, via the Northern Strategy Trust Fund: "Board Leadership Training" and "Youth Leadership & Skills Development Training". (Tr'ondek Hwech'in First Nation is also a partner in the Youth Leadership project.)
